Lucien Douglas

Biography

 

Lucien Douglas has an extensive career as an actor in professional theatre, film, and television, with recognition in The New York Times, Time Magazine, Backstage, and Women's Wear Daily.  He has acted over 100 roles, including featured on Broadway with Zoe Caldwell and Dame Judith Anderson in MEDEA; Off-Broadway at Roundabout Theatre in NAKED (with Fran Brill), FAMILY BUSINESS (with Richard Greene & Joel Polis), CANDIDA (with Joan Copeland), and ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD (with John Rubenstein, John Wood and Stephen Lang); and at several regional theatres, including the Kennedy Center, Theatre Virginia, North Shore Music Theatre, and the Clarence Brown Company.  Television and film credits include THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: WAR OF THE WORLDS (WGBH Boston), WALKER TEXAS RANGER (CBS), ANOTHER WORLD (NBC), ONE LIFE TO LIV (ABC), AFTER THE FALL (NBC's Hallmark Hall of Fame, starring Faye Dunaway), MEDEA (WQED: Pittsburgh), A GLORIOUS SYSTEM OF THINGS, MISS CONGENIALITY (starring Sandra Bullock and Michael Caine), MAN OF THE HOUSE (starring Tommy Lee Jones), and SNO CONE, INC. (starring Morgan Fairchild and Tony Sirico).  He received an Austin Critic’s Table Nomination as “Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy” for his performance in Annie Weisman’s BE AGGRESSIVE, and was featured as “Walter Flood” in the Zachary Scott Theatre production of BECKY'S NEW CAR, written & directed by Steven Dietz and starring Lauren Lane.

 

Lucien Douglas is Associate Professor of Acting in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas at Austin, where he received  the 2014 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, 2012 College of Fine Arts Distinguished Teaching Award (serving as Fall 2012 College of Fine Arts commencement speaker), the 2010 Department of Theatre and Dance Teaching Excellence Award, and the 2000 Texas Excellence Teaching Award.  An avid supporter of secondary school theatre programs, Douglas conducts annual workshops for approximately 700 high school students and teachers.

 

Lucien Douglas has been a guest artist in both academic and professional theatres across the country, including The Juilliard School; North Carolina School of the Arts; New York University Graduate Acting Program; Penn State University; Clarence Brown Company at the University of Tennessee; University of Wyoming; St. Edward’s University; Southwestern University; and South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities.  He taught in New York City at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Weist-Barron Television School.  Recent directing credits include the world premiere of Robert Schenkkan’s comedy THE MARRIAGE OF MISS HOLLYWOOD AND KING NEPTUNE; THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA; THE SHADOW BOX; LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT; FOUR BEDROOM PLAYS BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS; and the Texas premier of Bruce Norris’ Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, CLYBOURNE PARK.  Douglas recently acted the role of “Gaev” in THE CHERRY ORCHARD with Lauren Lane, directed by Brant Pope; and the role of “Holofernes” in LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, directed by John Langs.

 

Douglas' solo presentation of A SHADOW AMONG STRANGERS--PERFORMING THE LIFE & WORKS OF EDGAR ALLAN POE has met with great success, originating for the University of Texas at Austin Harry Ransom Research Center's celebration of Poe's 200th anniversary.  On the concert stage, Douglas’ repertoire includes the narration of ENOCH ARDEN, Tennyson’s romantic ballad set to piano accompaniment by Richard Strauss.

 

Lucien Douglas holds a PhD in Theatre from Michigan State University, a BFA in Dramatic Arts from the University of Connecticut, and a certificate of professional training from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. He is a member of ACTORS' EQUITY ASSOCIATION & SAG-AFTRA.
